Today, Friday June 26th, 2015 marks groundbreaking American history.
After a long battle for gay rights, the Supreme Court ruled that the Constitution guarantees a right to same-sex marriage in all 50 states.
Supreme Court Associate Justice, Justin Anthony Kennedy, wrote the majority opinion in the 5 to 4 decision, joined by 4 of the court’s liberal justices. “No union is more profound than marriage, for it embodies the highest ideals of love, fidelity, devotion, sacrifice, and family,” he wrote.
Solicitor General Donald B. Verrilli Jr. announced, “Gay and lesbian people are equal. They deserve equal protection of the laws, and they deserve it now.”
