12 Year Old Country Singer, Bailey James
This young girl is extremely wise beyond her years. Little twelve-year-old Bailey James from Pennsylvania is bringing something to the music industry that no other young country artist is doing. Her voice is VERY reminiscent of the legendary Patsy Cline while her song lyrics speak to kids her own age. This star in the making has been writing with hit songwriters in Nashville while recording her debut album. Here’s our team’s interview with up and coming country artist, Bailey James.
So Bailey, tell me a little bit about yourself.
Well, I’m from Pennsylvania [and] I’m a normal girl like the other girls at my school who are in 6th grade. [It’s hard because] I have to transition from being Bailey James to being regular Bailey at school. Not a lot of people get this opportunity [and] there are no girls in my grade who are doing what I’m doing.
What are your favorite subjects in school?
My favorite subjects are reading and language arts because I get to write in language arts. I’m good at writing too. I like The Tale of Despereaux. That’s my favorite book.
How are you balancing music and school?
I can kinda just juggle it. I really never get any sleep [laughs]; I’ve gotten used to that. I go to school at like 7:30ish and go to bed at like 12 at night
What do you like to do in your spare time?
I really like running and did cheer before I had to stop because of music. I like hanging out with my friends, going ice skating, going to dances, going to all these things with my friends. I really like writing songs and sometimes I like to cook.
Do you have any pets?
I have three pets! One’s a guinea pig named Squeakers. He’s like six which is kinda weird because guinea pigs don’t live that long. I have two cats named Cinnamon and Quasi. One has a a hump on her back and it’s really weird.
Any other random facts about yourself?
Oh, I have a really cool birthday! One-Two-Three! (01/02/03)
So Bailey, I hear that you’ve been writing in Nashville with hit songwriters who’ve written for some of the biggest names in country music. What’s that experience been like?
I get nervous over really little things [even though] I knew it was going to be really fun. I thought it was a [learning] experience because I didn’t know how much these writers wrote.
And what’s your songwriting process like?
Well, for a while now, I’ve actually been looking in books and online for quotes. I get an idea from many quotes. I’ll write verses first and the choruses are harder for me. I write often. For a week I may write every day and sometimes I write every three days. A lot of writing even happens [at] school.
Who are some of your biggest musical influences?
My favorites are Patsy Cline, Tammy Wynette, Loretta Lynn, Hank Williams Sr., I listen to all of that and I never get bored. Oh yeah, and Johnny Cash!
Are there any influences from artists of today?
Yeah! I really love Taylor Swift. I really like Meghan Trainor, too. I just got her album and it’s amazing. I’m really [into] empowering girl groups, like Maddie & Tae. [I like] their song, ‘Girl In A Country Song‘.
That’s awesome, Bailey. I know you just released a free track. Can you tell us about it and where we can get it?
Yes, I wanted to offer this first single for free to anyone who wanted it. People have been so nice to me by following and talking to me on Instagram, Twitter, and subscribing to my YouTube Channel, I wanted to do something nice for them in return, ya know? Any one can visit http://GiftFromBailey.com or TEXT the word “Bailey” to 38470 and get their free copy of my first single. I’d love to hear what they think of it. [Recording] it was a really fun day for me. At first I was really nervous and I was like, ‘whoa this is a lot,’ but I got used to it. I had only imagined singing in a studio and making an actual single.
Tell me a little about this YouTube Channel of yours.
It’s really cool. Every week I post a new singing video where I do my own version of a popular cover song. I also do a weekly “5 Questions with Bails” episode where I actually answer 4 questions I get from the “Bailey James Gang” on Twitter and Instagram plus I add 1 random fact about myself. I encourage anyone from the gang to share a random fact about themselves as well in the comments below the video. I love getting to know people.
I know that you got to privately audition with America’s Got Talent. What was that like?
I wasn’t nervous the whole [time] I was auditioning. When I was auditioning, it was a once in a lifetime [chance]. Really cool!
I’m sure that was a very exciting time… almost as exciting as your upcoming debut EP release?
I’m most excited about how people are going to react to it. It’s different and different is good. I don’t think anyone else has done old country [songs] with [teenage] lyrics. I’m excited to see how kids my age will react to it.
What advice do you have for other twelve year old girls who aspire to do what you’re doing?
I’ve got a couple of things [laughs]… other people’s opinions on [your] music [and] image do not matter. If you’re enjoying it and like what you’re doing, I feel like you shouldn’t let people who are just being mean get in the way. There are a lot of mean people [especially] in social media and you can’t let that bother you. Keep working and keep dreaming big because that’s exactly what I’m doing.
